  • Santa’s Reindeer

    3

According to the Alaska Department of Fish and Game, while both male and female reindeer grow antlers in the summer each year, male reindeer drop their antlers at the beginning of winter, usually late November to mid-December.   Female reindeer retain their antlers till after they give birth in the spring.
    The Reinder

Therefore, according to EVERY historical rendition depicting Santa’s reindeer, EVERY single one of them, from Rudolph to Blitzen, had to be a girl.

We should’ve known… ONLY women would be able to drag a fat man in a red velvet suit all around the world in one night and not get lost.

  • The week that was Christmas

    1

Unlike last year with a lot of family coming down for Christmas, this year we were going to have a quite Christmas. I took 4 days off to enjoy the Christmas week which began with making sweets and putting up the traditional Christmas tree and decorations. Ruth volunteered to make the crib this year. Did a lot of last minute shopping (lazy me or preoccupied me dunno which took over this year :( ) – yup I even went shopping on the 24th morning!

We went for midnight mass which now ends at miidnight instead of beginning at the time due to the sound restrictions. Caught up with some friends after mass and then stayed up all night wrapping Christmas presents :)

Had a busy Christmas day between wishing people over the phone and packing Christmas sweets. Dropped in to Pri and Ryan’s home as it was their first Christmas in their new home and took over their surprise :) Rushed home, sat down to a really yummy lunch after which we finally opened our presents. Mum was Santa this year.

Spent the evening with Ajay and his Mum and then went to Dynasty for dinner where Ruth joined us. Headed to Barista for dessert and memories of a summer evening nearly 3 years ago :)

Ajay came over on the 26th and had lunch with us before which Mum fitted me for the bridesmaid’s dress – I can assure you that that was a torture in itself.

We headed to Lamingting Road and picked up a whole load of electronics. Treated myself to a badly needed 500 GB hard disk – went in for Western Digital Elements Model and a new DVD writer. While we were there dropped in to my ophthalmologist and placed an order for a new set of contact lenses.

27th was my cuzzies wedding. It was also school friend Elaine and Sunil’s wedding. Dropped in at her place to wish her as I would not be able to make it for the wedding.

Spent 28 afternoon watching movies with Ajay.

Headed back to work on the 29th. Last year we were busy getting ready for my parents silver wedding celebrations. This year we went out to Gajalee at Phoenix for dinner. Must say that while the food was excellent, the service was pathetic and on more than one occasion I felt like shaking up the waiters to drum some life into them! We headed to Naturals for ice cream.

Denis (ya ya I know your are reading this :P ), Michelle and the kiddos came over in the evening. Spent some fun time with the kids and watched the excitement with which they found the presents that Santa left for them under the Christmas Tree.

Ajay came over and set up the DVD writer and then we headed back to Phoenix Mills for dinner at Maroosh. It didn’t quite meet dinner expectations but then you can’t always have them met. Had dessert at Natural’s again – this time we exchanged our orders :)

The last day of the year was spent at work. Came home a bit early and went for Thanksgiving service and Midnight Mass.  Ruth and I stayed up till the wee hours of the morning watching movies and drinking hot coffee laced with brandy :)

New Years Day – had lunch at home and then headed to Ajay’s place where we watched some more movies and stuffed ourselves with pizza. Decided not to wait for dinner as I had work early the next morning and needed my rest.

How has the New Year been treating you guys?

  • The 12 Days of Christmas – A Gift Idea in Itself

    2

The 12 days of Christmas, folklore claims, is a story (now a carol) that the Christians put together to instruct the children in the Catholic Faith when the faith was being persecuted.

Here is how the Carol goes -

On the first day of Christmas, my true love gave to me, a partridge in a pear tree
    Symbolizing Jesus Christ
On the second day of Christmas, my true love gave to me, 2 turtle doves
To signify that the Bible is divided into 2 parts – The Old Testament and the New Testament
On the third day of Christmas, my true love gave to me 3 French Hens
    Symbolizing Love, Hope and Faith
On the fourth day of Christmas, my true love gave to me 4 Colly birds
The 4 Gospels – Mathew, Mark, Luke and John
On the fifth day of Christmas, my true love gave to me, 5 Gold rings
Representing the first 5 books of the Bible called the Torah Law
On the sixth day of Christmas, my true love gave to me, 6 Geese a laying
Symbolizing the 6 Days of Creation
On the seventh day of Christmas, my true love gave to me, 7 Swans a swimming
Symbolizing the 7 gifts of the Holy Spirit – Prophesy, Serving, Teaching, Exortation, Mercy, Contribution and Leadership
On the eight day of Christmas, my true love gave to me, 8 Maids a milking
    The 8 Beatitudes
On the ninth day of Christmas, my true love gave to me, 9 Drummers drumming
Representing the nine fruits of the Holy Spirit – love, joy, peace, kindness, faithfulness, gentleness, goodness, self control and patience
On the tenth day of Christmas, my true love gave to me, 10 Pipers piping
    The 10 Commandments
On the eleventh day of Christmas, my true love gave to me, 11 Ladies dancing
To tell us about the 11 faithful disciples
On the twelfth day of Christmas, my true love gave to me, 12 Lords a leaping
Symbolizing the 12 points of belief in the Apostles Creed

This prompted me to think along the 12 Days of Christmas lines while I was thinking of what to get Pri and Ryan for Christmas. So this is what I did.

For every day of Christmas (12 days) I left a gift under their tree corresponding to the day. These are what I thought of, you could think of other items to use as gifts.

First Day of Christmas – One potted plant
Second Day of Christmas – 2 handkerchiefs (one each)
Third Day of Christmas – 3 Magnets
Fourth Day of Christmas – 4 Candy Canes
Fifth Day of Christmas – A set of 5 boxes containing 5 exotic spices
Sixth Day of Christmas – 6 Chocolates
Seventh Day of Christmas – A comic strip wall hanging with 7 “Love Is” comics
Eight Day of Christmas – 8 marshmellows
Nineth Day of Christmas – 9 pieces of Christmas decoration for their tree
Tenth Day of Christmas – A set of 10 tea lights
Eleventh Day of Christmas – 11 handmade gift tags
Twelfth Day of Christmas – A CD with 12 love songs

  • Merry Christmas Everyone

I’ve always been interested in nativity scenes that are different, so I really like this one that Malcolm made. :) (you can read about his efforts on his blog)

  • A new liturgical year

    0

The feast of Christ the King is considered the last day of the Christian liturgical year and with Advent the new year begins (I’ve wondered about the week in between the 2 Sundays and the kind of limbo the Church seems to be in , must find out about it sometime)

As part of advent, we set up a wreath ( I make mine form fresh Christmas Tree boughs) with 4 candles in it – each symbolizing a week of preparation in the Season of Advent. The wreath usually has 3 purple candles and 1 pink one. The purple candles represent repentance – our faith urges us to repent for our wrongdoings and begin afresh – and while the pink one symbolizes joy – at the coming of Christ.

These candles also stand for Hope, Peace Joy and Love.
