I’ve always loved reading and have been a voracious reader from the time I was in primary school. My favorite place in the world was Stand Book Stall in town. My grandfather used to take me there as a special treat. Standing there on the first floor of the store was sheer bliss for the 8 year old who loved to escape to the world of Brer Rabbit, Amelia Jane, The 5 Find Outers and Famous Five. Then came the school series of Malory Towers, St. Clares and the Naughty Girl in School followed by the mystery series of Nancy Drew and the Hardy Boys.
While I enjoy so called adult literature, there are still times on a lazy afternoon when I reach into my bookshelf and shake the dust off my childhood collections and let myself get lost in the tales. Every time my Mum asks me to give away those children stories to make space for my ever expanding collection, I cannot bring myself to part with any of my books. Who knows maybe my kids will enjoy reading as much as I do or maybe I’ll start a library someday
Added to my collection last week was “Measuring the Earth” by Daniel Kehlmann (translated to English by Carol Brown Janeway) and an Omnibus of Sir Arthur Conan Doyle’s stories.
