Clement and Anne

It has been a year since Uncle Clement passed away. But time has not dulled the memory of one of the gentlest men I knew. He was the “other” grandpa to me all the years I was tiny and used to live with him and Aunt Anne at Vakola when my own grandparents were on holiday.

As I grew up he was the only person apart from my own grandfather who I could have cricket conversations with that would get us into a frenzy about who should have come in to bat where in the order, the field positioning, etc.

Uncle Clement had magic in his fingers. He could repair almost any appliance /gadget around the house. He would pick out masala with exact precision so that the dish my aunt would add that to would be yummy!

He had a lovely way with children. His own grandchildren will attest to that fact. He always seemed to know the answers to all my baby questions and managed to satisfy my curiosity. He was always interested in what we were doing at school and college.
He was a voracious reader and would faithfully spend hours over the newspaper. You could ask him about virtually anything in the news and he would engage you in conversation- analyzing all aspects of the story.

Uncle Clement had a calming effect on people and would remain un flustered in the face of trouble. His mere cheerful presence was reassuring. Even though he lost the battle with the physical complications he had, he remained cheerful right to the end.

I will miss you Uncle Clement, I guess all the people who were closest to him will do so to.
